Straight answers about AHRQ data

How big is the AHRQ corpus Datadory delivers?

493 survey files spanning 1996 through the 2024 survey year, organized at five levels of granularity: person, family, job, event and condition. The Full Year Consolidated files are the workhorse - one row per person carrying demographics, conditions, employment, income, expenditures and twelve months of coverage indicators.

How far back does the coverage run?

To 1996, the survey's first year. Panels overlap by design - each household is interviewed across two full calendar years and a fresh panel enters every year - which is what makes multi-year trend work on premiums, utilization and coverage churn possible without seams.

What makes the monthly coverage indicators worth having?

Annual coverage flags flatten exactly what underwriting and market-sizing need: the churn. With one indicator per source per month - Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, employer/union - you can count gap months, time transitions between public and private coverage, and measure spell length directly instead of inferring it.

Is event-level detail actually different from the annual totals?

Decisively so. Event files cover dental stays, hospital inpatient, emergency room, office-based and outpatient visits, and prescribed medicines - each medical event with its charges and payment-by-source split. That decomposition is how out-of-pocket burden gets attributed to specific conditions and service types rather than smeared into an annual average.
