Roughly 8 million, spanning both individuals (entity type 1) and organizations (entity type 2), with enumeration dates running from 2006 onward. Records were current through August 2026 at research time, and one row per NPI means counts by county, postal code or taxonomy are exact group-bys rather than estimates.

Which fields does the CMS registry document?

Thirteen mapped groups: NPI and entity type, legal names, business mailing and practice-location address blocks, multi-value NUCC taxonomy codes with license numbers and primary flags, authorized official contact details, enumeration and last-update dates, deactivation reason codes and reactivation dates, plus EIN where furnished.

Can an NPI prove a supplier is licensed?

No - and CMS says so itself. Holding an NPI establishes only that the provider exists in the enumeration system; it validates nothing about licensure or credentialing status. Treat the registry as the identity layer of a vetting workflow, and pair it with state license checks before a distribution agreement gets signed.

Can a sample be cut to my segment?
