Straight answers about Data from CMS NPPES NPI Registry, delivered clean. data

What is an NPI?

A ten-digit identification number issued to every covered US health care provider - individuals and organizations alike - and the identifier the billing and claims world already speaks. One provider, one number, forever, which is exactly what makes it usable as a deduplication spine.

What is the difference between NPI-1 and NPI-2 records?

Enumeration type splits the corpus in two. NPI-1 covers individual clinicians - name, credential and specialty. NPI-2 covers organizational entities: hospitals, clinics, nursing facilities, pharmacies and group practices, which additionally carry legal business name and an authorized-official contact block. Both arrive in the same schema with the same ten-digit key.

How many providers does CMS NPPES NPI Registry data cover?

Millions of active records spanning every covered provider in the United States and its territories - hospital systems' member facilities, clinics, nursing facilities, pharmacies, group practices and solo practitioners in one consistent row shape. Sampled records carry enumeration dates reaching back to December 2006.

Does holding an NPI prove a provider is credentialed?

No. Issuance of an NPI is not an endorsement: it neither ensures nor validates that a clinician holds active credentials or that a facility stands in good regulatory stead. Read the registry as identification master data - numbers, taxonomies, addresses - and run credentialing against sources built for that job.
