Straight answers about crates.io data

How many crates does the data cover?

320,253 crates were registered at the August 2026 cataloging pass, against a registry-wide counter of 408,131,461,198 all-time downloads. Both figures move continuously as Rust developers publish and depend, so totals quoted at delivery reflect the pull you receive rather than a frozen brochure number.

What is the difference between downloads and recent_downloads?

`downloads` is the crate's all-time count; `recent_downloads` covers a trailing window of roughly ninety days. Read together they separate durable infrastructure from momentary spikes - a modest crate with a rising recent figure signals something different than a famous one whose curve has flattened.

Can the registry be segmented by topic?

Yes. Keyword and category assignments are the native cuts, shipped as counted aggregates: 14,989 crates tagged `cli`, 6,491 tagged `ai`, 9,927 in the cryptography category. Full per-crate keyword, category, version and owner listings arrive as additional fields on request.

How far back does the publication history reach?

To the earliest surviving registry records, in its 2014 launch era - serde, for instance, carries a creation stamp of 5 December 2014. Every row holds `created_at` and `updated_at`, so cohort analysis by publication month runs across the whole decade without stitching external archives.
