What is Freight Analysis Framework Version 5?
The joint FHWA-BTS origin-destination freight database: estimated tonnage, value and ton-miles for every zone pair among 132 domestic regions and 8 foreign regions, broken out by 43 two-digit SCTG commodity groups, mode and trade type. It integrates the Commodity Flow Survey, Census trade data and sector-specific sources into one modeled picture of US freight movement.
How far forward do the FAF5 forecasts run?
To 2050, at five-year increments starting in 2030. Mid-range growth is the headline line; high and low scenarios ride alongside as separate tonnage columns in the extended variant, never blended into the baseline. Datadory labels every projected figure so a stress case cannot masquerade as an observation.
Does FAF5 cover modes beyond ground freight?
Yes - despite sitting in the cargo ground slice, the domestic mode field codes truck, rail, water, air (including truck-air combinations), multiple modes & mail and pipeline, with separate leg codes for the foreign portions of imports and exports. Isolating the truck share of any zone-pair commodity flow takes one filter.
Are FAF5 figures observations or estimates?
Estimates throughout, and honest ones: the 2017 base year and 2018-2024 observations anchor modeled flows, the 2030-2050 values are scenario projections, and the 1997-2012 state series are reprocessed reconstructions. Each layer keeps its own label in a Datadory delivery, so aggregations never mix vintages silently.
