Straight answers about FHWA / Oak Ridge National Laboratory data

How many households are in the 2022 NHTS core?

The 2022 public-use core covers 7,893 national households, rising to 27,290 once area add-on samples are included. Those households yield 16,997 person records, 14,684 vehicle records, 31,074 travel-day trips and 16,997 long-distance trips, all keyed together on HOUSEID.

Which trip details does each record carry?

Mode (walk, bicycle, car, SUV, van, pickup, RV, school bus, transit modes, airplane), purpose across home-based work, shopping, social and recreational categories, distance in miles, duration in minutes, 24-hour start and end times, vehicle occupancy and a final 7-day trip weight.

How far back does the series reach?

Nine waves: 1969, 1977, 1983, 1990, 1995, 2001, 2009, 2017 and 2022, with the NextGen wave fielded January 2022 through January 2023. Earlier waves ran larger - 150,147 households in 2009 and 129,696 in 2017 including add-on areas - so the panel deepens as it goes back.

Do the files include survey weights?

Yes. Every file ships full-file weights - WTTRDFIN, the 7-day national trip weight, and WTHHFIN, the 7-day national household weight that doubles as the vehicle weight - and replicate-weight files accompany the core for variance estimation, so standard errors come straight out of the delivery.
