Straight answers about GDELT Project (Google Jigsaw) data
How far back does GDELT Project 2.0 data reach?
January 1, 1979 to the present at daily historical resolution, with second-level ingest timestamps on every row from February 19, 2015 onward via DATEADDED, and a back-extension toward 1800 in progress. A quarter-billion-plus event records sit in that span, and a single year of knowledge graph totals about 2.5 TB uncompressed.
What is the difference between an Events row and a Knowledge Graph row?
An Events row records one coded action between two actors - actor codes, the CAMEO action code, QuadClass, GoldsteinScale, tone and location - roughly 60 attributes per event. A Knowledge Graph row codifies one whole document: persons, organizations, locations, themes and counts, plus GCAM assessments of over 2,300 emotions and themes.
How precisely are events located?
To city or landmark centroids. Each actor carries a complete geography block - place name, country code, ADM1 code, feature ID, latitude, longitude and geo type - mirrored across Actor1Geo_, Actor2Geo_ and ActionGeo_, drawn from hundreds of thousands of outlets worldwide.
Does the dataset cover languages other than English?
Yes. Monitoring spans broadcast, print and web news in over 100 languages, and the Translingual stream machine-translates 65 languages representing 98.4% of daily non-English volume into English, with translated records marked rather than mixed in unmarked.
