How far back does the AIS vessel traffic archive go?

Why are vessel names missing from older years?

Privacy, deliberately applied. At US Coast Guard request the 2009-2014 files remove ship name and call sign, and MMSI values are further encrypted for 2010-2014. From 2015 the publisher restored missing identity fields from its identification services, so name-level joins are strongest in recent years.

Can I get live vessel positions from this source?

No. The record holds completed historical broadcasts only, with no live or near-real-time component. Teams that need current positions pair a streaming feed with this archive - the stream covers today, the archive supplies seventeen years of precedent behind it.
