What is the difference between a Metascore and a user score?
The Metascore is a weighted 0-100 composite of published critic reviews, paired with a review count and a sentiment bucket such as 'Universal acclaim'. The user score is a separate 0-10 average from registered Metacritic users. They disagree constantly and usefully - Ocarina of Time holds 99 from 22 critics against a 9.1 from users - which is why both travel on every row.
How many titles do the two catalogs cover?
14,330 ranked games and 17,312 ranked films. Both counts apply above a curation floor: titles with fewer than seven critic reviews sit outside the ranked results, so the figures describe a reviewed core rather than every title ever listed. The underlying catalogs list more than the ranked totals; deliveries draw on the ranked core unless a scope asks otherwise.
Which titles rank at the very top?
On the all-time games view, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time leads at Metascore 99 from 22 critic reviews, with SoulCalibur close behind at 98 from 24. On the film side the default Metascore sort opens a three-way tie at 100 - Casablanca (user 8.7, 18 reviews), Tokyo Story (8.4, 19) and Dekalog (7.3, 13).
Does every record carry both critic and user scores?
No, and the dictionary says so. Some film records arrive with a null user score, and any title under the seven-critic threshold carries no Metascore at all because it sits outside the ranked set. Fields are marked nullable where that applies so nothing breaks quietly downstream.
