Straight answers about Data from National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), delivered clean. data
How many accident records are in the NTSB data Datadory delivers?
Hundreds of thousands of investigated cases since 1962, split across a 1962-1981 historical file, a 1982-present master file and a consolidated pre-2008 cut. Exact per-file counts are only knowable after proper conversion, so Datadory reports the reconciled figure on delivery rather than quoting a stale number.
What do the NTSB cause and factor codes cover?
Three documented vocabularies: occurrence codes 100-430 for event subjects such as door, flight control and powerplant; phase-of-operation codes 500-610 for takeoff, cruise, approach and the rest of the flight profile; and cause/factor codes 10000-16912 covering airframe, systems and powerplant findings. Delivered as labeled lookup tables joined to the case rows.
Does NTSB data cover only accidents, or incidents too?
Both: US civil aviation accidents plus selected incidents, from 1962 to the present, including US-registered aircraft events outside the country. Each case carries one record with aircraft-level detail, so incident-only and accident-only views are filters rather than separate extracts.
Can I join NTSB records to aircraft ownership data?
Yes - every case carries the aircraft registration (tail) number, which keys directly against the N-number in FAA registry data. Pairing the investigation archive with current and deregistered registrations turns 'what happened' into 'what happened to whom', and the join is pre-keyed in delivered samples.
