Straight answers about National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data
What does Datadory deliver from NHTSA?
Two cataloged products. The vPIC registry holds tens of thousands of manufacturer filings under 49 CFR Part 565 and resolves a VIN to up to 154 specification variables. The Vehicle Safety product spans recall campaigns across model years 1949 to 2027 plus ODI owner complaints, each carrying crash flags, injury counts and involved tire products.
How do the two NHTSA products differ?
Pre-sale reference versus post-sale history. vPIC records what each US-market vehicle is - legal manufacturer, WMI code, make, model, body class, powertrain, assembly plant. Vehicle Safety records what happened afterward: defect campaigns, owner grievances, remedies. Joined on make, model and model year you get a specification baseline with its failure history attached.
How far back does NHTSA recall coverage go?
To model year 1949, running forward through 2027, with a pseudo-year bucket holding tire and equipment records untied to any vehicle year. Complaints include filings observed through April 2026. Seven and a half decades of safety history, one row per event, never aggregated.
Can I get fields beyond the documented dictionary?
Yes. A vPIC decode exposes up to 154 variables while fifteen anchor the documented core, and the safety record documents twenty-nine across its four families. Anything outside the anchors - transmission attributes, WMI descriptor records, equipment plant codes - ships under additional fields on request alongside your sample.
