Straight answers about U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data
How many principal ports carry tonnage detail?
Exactly 150 polygon features in the Principal Ports layer, each carrying calendar-year 2023 total, domestic, foreign, import and export tons. Beyond the principals, summaries reach harbors, waterways, canals and states, with national totals consolidated under waterway code 9950.
What do the vessel tables document?
Eight WTLUS tables profile each surveyed vessel: Coast Guard registration number, net tonnage, VTCC and ICST construction-type codes, register and overall length and breadth to a tenth of a foot, drafts, horsepower, carrying capacity in short tons, cargo gear such as CRANE, and year built or rebuilt.
How are commodities classified?
On WCSC codes derived from Standard International Trade Classification Revision 3, with published cross-references mapping them to lock-tonnage codes and NAERG hazardous-commodity groupings - so coal, grain and chemical flows reconcile across federal programs instead of stalling at mismatched codelists.
Does this source track where vessels are?
No. It records what vessels carried - tonnage by commodity between origin and destination - not their positions. Movement traces live in the AIS collections alongside it in the catalog, and the comparison with UK Maritime and Shipping Statistics spells out how the two national methodologies differ.
