Straight answers about U.S. Census Bureau API data

What is the difference between the advance and the full monthly retail series?

Speed against completeness. MARTS publishes the earliest official estimate for each reference month across roughly 40-50 retail categories, while MRTS is the full monthly series carrying revised values plus the inventory measures the advance release does not include. Teams seed short-horizon forecasts with the advance figure and reconcile against the survey's revisions - keeping the vintage labeled so a backtest never mixes two levels of information.

Which NAICS lines matter most for home furnishings teams?

NAICS 442 furniture and home furnishings stores, its children 4421 furniture stores and 4422 home furnishings stores, and NAICS 444 building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, which carries the home-improvement dollar pool. All four publish outright in both retail series, with parent, sibling and child categories available on request - see [NAICS 442 furniture and home furnishings stores](/glossary/naics-442-furniture-home-furnishings-stores) for how the classification nests.

How deep does the Economic Census geography go?

All the way down the published ladder: national, regions, states, counties, consolidated cities and metropolitan/micropolitan statistical areas, plus the Island Areas - Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Roughly 1,100 six-digit industries are tabulated per geography level in the 2022 edition. What it never contains is establishment-level microdata; these are industry-by-geography aggregates built to be cited.

How far back does the retail history reach?

Decades. Each kind of business and measure forms its own time series, and major retail categories run back well before modern scanner data - our samples open in January 1992, with documented selections extending over still-earlier calendar years. Start dates vary by category, so the working history for any given cut is confirmed in the sample Datadory prepares for you.
