Straight answers about U.S. Census Bureau (LEHD) data

What exactly are the Quarterly Workforce Indicators?

Federal economic indicators measuring workforce flows quarter by quarter: beginning- and end-of-quarter employment, stable full-quarter employment, all hires and new hires, separations, the stable-job turnover rate, firm job gains and losses, and average monthly earnings of full-quarter workers, each cut by geography, industry, worker demographics and firm traits.

How far back does the LEHD panel go?

Quarterly observations begin nominally in 1990, with the earliest observed files starting 1991 Q1. First quarters vary slightly by state, so the confirmed back-run for your geographies is established at sample request. Either way, three decades of quarterly depth per state is on the table.

What is the difference between Emp and EmpS?

Emp counts jobs on the first day of the quarter; EmpS counts jobs held by the same worker at the same employer on both the first and the last day. EmpS is the stable core, which is why it anchors the stable-job turnover rate and the earnings measure EarnS.

Can I get just one sector and a handful of states?

That is the default shape of a delivery. Name the industry, the states and the quarter range, and the extract arrives holding exactly those cells - keyed, documented, and with status flags carried through so nobody charts a one-employer county by accident.
