Straight answers about U.S. Census Bureau – M3 Program data

Which M3 series covers electronics manufacturing?

Category 34S Computer and Electronic Products, NAICS 334 - the electronics slice of the survey's 89 manufacturing categories. It runs down to six-digit subcategories including Electronic Computer Manufacturing, Computer Storage Device Manufacturing and Semiconductor and Related Device Manufacturing (34G). Note the April 2010 report folded semiconductors into the 334 totals, so pre-2010 comparisons need that break handled explicitly.

How far back does the M3 time series reach?

Monthly NAICS-basis estimates run from January 1992 to present, with SIC-basis series beneath them covering 1958-2001 and the survey itself conducted since 1957. Across the NAICS span that is roughly 420 months multiplied by more than 174 series and both adjustment flags - about 600,000 estimates in total, deep enough to model several complete electronics cycles.

Does the M3 survey cover state or metro-level manufacturing?

No. M3 publishes United States totals only - national estimates with no state, metro or regional breakdown. Place-level analysis needs a companion dataset rather than a deeper cut of this one, which is why the catalog files companions alongside it in the same industry slice.

How current are the figures Datadory delivers?

Delivery cadence is yours to set - daily, weekly, or hourly. On content: an Advance Report on durable goods lands roughly 18 working days after month end and the Full Report roughly 23 working days after. Current-month estimates are preliminary and revised in later months, and history is rebenchmarked annually; revisions arrive flagged in deliveries rather than discovered mid-model.
