Straight answers about USDA Forest Service data

What exactly is Timber Products Output?

The manufacturing-side counterpart to the field inventory: wood-product mills are surveyed on facility size, products and capacity, and the harvest is reconciled against what left the woods. Every estimate is classified into roundwood products, logging residues, other removals, a residential fuelwood estimate or mill residues.

How far back do the inventory panels reach?

Observed collections start with early panels in 1984 and run through current 2022-2024 cycles, with each plot remeasured every five to ten years. Timber Products Output survey years span 1997 through 2024, varying by state, and per-state participation is documented rather than assumed.

Why are plot coordinates fuzzed?

Privacy law protects exact plot locations, so public files carry fuzzed or swapped coordinates, with precise positions reserved for plots numbered above 40,000. County, survey-unit and state keys remain fully resolved, which is the resolution most supply and valuation work needs anyway.

Which fields matter most for timberland valuation?

Site index at base age 50, site productivity class, stand age, forest type and the ownership-group codes that separate national forest from corporate private timberland. Beside per-acre cubic-foot volume, those columns carry the growth-rate and comparability assumptions in discounted-cash-flow land models.
