How far back does the data reach?

Survey estimates run from 1850 forward, and the Census of Agriculture reaches 1840, taken every five years. The newest census wave is 2022, published February 13, 2024, while census database tables retrieve from 1997 onward - nearly two centuries of comparable county history.

How fine is the geography?

Ten aggregation levels on the estimate bank: national, state, agricultural district, county, multi-state and sub-state region, watershed, congressional district, American Indian reservation, ZIP code and international. County is where feedstock concentration, processor catchment and supplier density resolve.

Why do some values show up as (D) or (Z)?

Suppression codes, not zeros. `(D)` marks a cell withheld to avoid identifying individual respondents, `(Z)` other withholding reasons. Small-county livestock figures hit these most often - treat them as missing, because a naive sum quietly understates a county's herd.
