Arms Farm Financial Survey Data: Dataset Structure and Field Coverage

ARMS stands for the Agricultural Resource Management Survey, and USDA describes it plainly as its primary source on the production practices, resource use and economic well-being of America's farms and ranches. The USDA Economic Research Service publishes the estimates, organized into two streams that move on different clocks.

Four fields carry the analytical weight: estimate and median hold the values, rse reports the relative standard error, and the flags unreliable_estimate and variable_is_invalid mark weak numbers before they reach your model. publication_date stamps each row individually.

Dimensions arrive as pairs: report names the tailored report (Farm Business Income Statement), category and category_value carry the first slice (NASS Region / South region), category2 and category2_value the second (Production Specialty / General Cash Grains), and farmtype adds the typology layer (Farm Operator Households).

One published sample ties the schema together: 3,444 farms (kount, unit Number) in the General Cash Grains specialty of the South region's Farm Business Income Statement, statistic TOTAL, published March 20, 2026. Because precision travels with every number, you can drop flagged estimates programmatically instead of discovering them at peer review.

The finance stream ships as eight tailored reports, and they divide cleanly into a business half and a household half. The split matters because the two halves answer different commercial questions: one prices a sector, the other prices the families running it.

The business half covers the balance sheet, income statement, financial ratios, structural characteristics, debt repayment capacity and government payments - six reports that together read like a lender's underwriting file for US production agriculture. The household half covers operator household income and the operator household balance sheet - the two reports that USDA ERS Farm Income and Wealth Statistics does not offer alongside its sector accounts, along with the farm-typology and production-specialty dimensions.

Every report can be sliced by the same seven dimensions: state, NASS region, farm resource region, economic sales class, farm typology, operator age and production specialty. Long-run income series. USDA ERS Farm Income and Wealth Statistics releases quarterly with about 460,000 rows per full-release CSV, cash receipts condensed back to 1910 and 2025-2026 forecasts - stronger for time series, but it lacks ARMS's operator household reports and typology dimension.

Physical volumes. USDA NASS Quick Stats (quality 10) answers how much was produced where, with records back to 1850 and up to 50,000 rows per API request; ARMS explains the finances and practice choices behind those counts.

Sub-state sizing. The USDA Census of Agriculture publishes county-resolved tables every five years (1840-2022), with 2022 and 2017 flat files around 138 MB gzipped each.
