What does one month of electrical steel index data look like as rows?

# one row per commodity per reference month
commodity : mineral insulating oil (IEC 60296)
reference_month : 2022-08
index_value : 178.159 # 78 points above the April 2017 base
publication_date : <month-end stamp following the reference month>
currency : EUR # reporting is almost entirely euros

commodity : GOES conventional
reference_month : 2022-08
index_value : <same release, own series level>

commodity : GOES high grade
status : SUSPENDED # too few reporting companies - no current prints

# base mechanics: every series reads exactly 1.000 at its reference date
commodity : GOES super high grade
reference_month : 2017-04
index_value : 1.000

Two things in those rows decide whether the series survives contact with a model. First, the base row is part of the data: because every series equals 1.0 at its reference date, percentage moves need no rebasing work on your side - subtract and divide. Second, stamps can disagree with themselves in the wild (one December 2024 release circulates stamped 31 January 2024), so delivered rows carry the reference_month resolved from release contents, not from listing labels. That cleaning pass ships done.

Which fields does the electrical steel index carry?

Five fields define the record, and the split is deliberate: one column identifies what moved, one carries the economics relative to base, and three make the row joinable across months, releases and currencies without guesswork. Definitions and examples ride beside every field in delivery, so nobody reverse-engineers column meaning from screen position.

How far does the GOES index travel against ordinary steel benchmarks?

Grain-oriented electrical steel is not hot-rolled coil with better manners. It is a narrow, capital-intensive grade made by a handful of mills, and it does not move one-to-one with the commodity boards everyone quotes. Those boards exist in the catalog too - SteelMint Prices & Indices runs daily and weekly assessments plus indices for iron ore, coking coal, billet, HRC and rebar across nine regions, and SteelBenchmarker Benchmark Prices averages twice-monthly prints for hot-rolled band, cold-rolled coil, plate and rebar across US, Western European and Chinese home markets plus world export - but neither quotes the GOES grade.

What should you know before building on the index?

Three things, all structural rather than cosmetic.

The series reflect a range of contributor sources rather than any single supplier's prices. That makes them ideal benchmarks and useless as invoices - and it explains why an individual quote can move further in a quarter than the index did. Contributor-source aggregation smooths exactly the volatility individual mills pass through, so when a supplier's increase outruns the index, the delta is information about that supplier, not noise in the data. The publisher offers no guidance on using the indices in pricing; market operators remain free to set their own.

And one series is absent by design. GOES High Grade stopped printing because too few companies kept reporting - a governance guard against inferring any one firm's commercially sensitive position. Absent prints there are a decision, not missing data, and they double as a reading on how concentrated that supply base is.

Where do production statistics fit beside the index?

UK ONS PRODCOM surveys annual UK manufacturers' sales across roughly 3,805 product codes - transformers, motors, generators and switchgear among them - with series reaching back to 2008 and explicit revision status on every row, so a demand assumption can be cited to a vintage rather than vibes.

Two engineering-context records round out the shelf. The IEC Standards Webstore resolves roughly 30,482 publications including 263 hits for 'power transformers' with newest records dated into August 2026, and EPRI - Power Grid Equipment Research surfaces about 359 transformer-related research records - between them explaining why the GOES grade carries a premium at all, from core-loss classes to the test procedures a compliant design must pass.

Who works with electrical steel index data?

Procurement and sourcing leads walk into supplier meetings with the band already drawn: when the GOES line rose over the quarter a quote covers, the lowest outliers get discounted on evidence instead of instinct, and escalations get anchored to a published series instead of a bilateral hunch.

FP&A and equity analysts covering electrical equipment map index turns onto OEM gross-margin bridges. The 2021-2022 GOES repricing visible in the archive is the stress case every model needs, and it is in the data rather than in a conference anecdote.

Why get the electrical steel index through Datadory?

Files, feeds, or straight into your warehouse. Daily, weekly, or hourly - your call.

The field dictionary travels alongside every pull, so the schema in your sample is the schema you ship against. Name the commodities, the geographies and the destination when you request a sample and the first cut comes back scoped to them.

Questions worth asking

Where can I get electrical steel price index data by month?

T&D Europe Commodity Indices & Reports is the recurring series: seven price-variation indices covering grain-oriented electrical steel grades, mineral insulating oil, electrotechnical papers and hot and cold steel, one reading per commodity per reference month, archived from 2020 across roughly seventy-plus releases. Datadory delivers it as typed rows with the reference month resolved from release contents.

Is the electrical steel index based on actual transaction prices?

No. Every series is a price-variation index pinned to 1.0 at its reference date, compiled from a range of contributor sources including national statistical offices rather than any single supplier's posted prices. Treat it as the direction-of-travel benchmark for budgeting and escalation clauses, not as an invoiceable price.

Why do readings for one of the GOES grades stop?

The GOES High Grade line is suspended because too few companies kept reporting - a deliberate governance guard against inferring any one firm's commercially sensitive position. Six of the seven series stay live, and the absence itself signals how concentrated that supply base is.

How far back does the electrical steel index history reach?

To 2020, with monthly readings through the present - roughly seventy-plus releases spanning the entire grain-oriented electrical steel repricing cycle that upended transformer economics. Each row keeps its own reference month and publication date, so lag between measurement and release stays visible in the data.

Can the GOES index be compared with ordinary steel price benchmarks?

Yes, and the spread is the analysis. Boards like SteelMint Prices & Indices and SteelBenchmarker Benchmark Prices assess hot-rolled coil, rebar and plate - the ordinary mill products. Neither quotes the GOES grade, so the gap between the T&D Europe line and an HRC benchmark isolates the electrical-steel premium that generic steel indices cannot explain.
