Lignite has its own coordinate in the account: SIEC code C0210, nested under C0200 (Brown coal) alongside C0220 (Sub-bituminous), separate from the hard-coal family at C0100. Lignite is mined where it burns, which is why its geography has barely moved while hard coal's collapsed. Read together, the shape of European coal fits in three numbers: brown coal consumption near 200 million thousand-tonne units running close to double hard coal's 110.6 million for inland use, because lignite burns at home while hard coal increasingly arrives by ship. Keep production (IPRD) distinct from calculated inland consumption (IC_CAL) - for lignite the two run close in most years, but they answer different questions, and conflating them is the classic first-draft error in a phase-out deck.

Geography - 44 reporting geographies: the EU-27 aggregate, every member state individually, EFTA countries except Switzerland, EU candidate and potential candidate countries, and the Western Balkans.
