How do you build the brand roster itself, name by name?
The roster comes from commerce surfaces, because a brand only appears there if it is actively selling. Lyst aggregates more than 27,000 brands and stores, with structured product pages exposing brand, price, list price, discount, color, category, retailer and availability; category pages return roughly 47 products per ItemList block with pagination, so a scripted crawl yields a deduplicated brand column fast. Zalando's catalog adds more than 7,000 brands across 29 European markets at article level (brand x style x colour x size), but it is a reference map built once, not a weekly feed: automated access returned HTTP 403 on every path tested including robots.txt, and contractual data access runs through Zalando's partner programme. BoF completes the entity layer differently — its topic and company taxonomies and the BoF 500 people index attach leadership names and earnings coverage to each company hub, with the public RSS feed carrying the most recent 100 items (verified to 21 August 2026).
What is the step-by-step build from empty sheet to scored territory list?
- Pull the roster. Crawl Lyst category pages (~47 products per ItemList block) and keep the distinct brand values; expect a five-figure brand list from its 27,000+ brand and store coverage.
- Resolve duplicates. Match Lyst brand strings against Zalando's 7,000+ European brand list manually or by fuzzy match — Zalando data is a one-time reference pull given the HTTP 403 wall on automated access.
- Attach firmographics. Join each resolved name to its FashionUnited profile for positioning and any published revenue and employment figures; log which entries stayed Premium so coverage gaps are visible.
- Add the entity hook. Map each account to its BoF company taxonomy node and note earnings coverage or M&A signals surfaced in the RSS feed's recent items.
- Compute the proxy. Allocate the relevant geography's wearing-apparel turnover (Eurostat) or textiles-and-clothing value added (World Bank WDI) across accounts by share of assortment breadth, and mark every derived figure as estimated.

Is there a free fashion company list with revenue?
Partly. FashionUnited's browsable company directory spans thousands of apparel and luxury firms across the full alphabet, with many enriched records flagged Premium, and its 14 statistics pages carry country-level market size, revenue and employment figures citing roughly 2018-2022. Official complements are free outright: Eurostat's PRODCOM wearing-apparel production under commercial delivery terms 4.0 and World Bank WDI textiles-and-clothing value added across 265 economies.
