How many companies manufacture communications equipment in the United States?

The distinction between those two counts is the whole game. An establishment is a single physical plant; a firm is the owning company, so a manufacturer with three factories registers three establishments and one firm. Anyone asking "how many companies" wants FIRM; anyone sizing factory capacity wants ESTAB. The dataset serves both for every geography level it publishes: the United States, regions, states, counties, consolidated cities, metro and micro areas, offshore areas and the Island Areas (American Samoa, CNMI, Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands).

It is also the pool's only dollar-denominated source of US manufacturing economics - revenue, payroll and value added for NAICS 3342 - which is why the count question and the market-size question resolve to the same table.

"Communications equipment manufacturing" is not one code. NAICS 3342 resolves into exactly three six-digit industries, each counted separately per geography:

1. 334210 Telephone Apparatus Manufacturing - handsets, switching and telephone apparatus.
2. 334220 Radio and Television Broadcasting and Wireless Communications Equipment Manufacturing - transmitters, antennas, broadcast gear and wireless equipment.
3. 334290 Other Communications Equipment Manufacturing - everything else the classification catches.

A handset assembler, a broadcast-transmitter maker and an RF component shop sit in different codes with different establishment, payroll and receipt figures. Any total you quote should state whether it sums all three or quotes one - filtering with NAICS2022=3342 returns the three-digit group while NAICS2022=334210 isolates a single line.

The boundary is definitional too. A firm whose devices transmit RF energy but whose primary business is computing may be classified elsewhere entirely, so the Census count is a count of manufacturing companies, not of every company that has ever shipped connected hardware. State your denominator before you publish a number.

CBP repeats establishments and employment every year but drops revenue and value added, so use it for trend lines rather than dollar sizing.

The practical rule mirrors what analysts do in adjacent manufacturing industries: cite the Economic Census year as the benchmark count, CBP for the most recent directional movement, and treat any sub-state figure newer than the latest release as unpublished.

It answers a different question, and the two are easy to confuse. The FCC ID Equipment Authorization Database (FCCID.io mirror) holds 76,774 active grantee registrations - every holder of an FCC ID authorizing RF equipment for US marketing, refreshed daily since filings began in 1998, with grantees in the US, China, Italy, Latvia, the UK and elsewhere.

That directory is a roster of certified device makers, not a census of manufacturers. It excludes companies making non-RF communications gear, includes foreign firms that merely sell into the US, and skews toward large OEMs - a single grantee code, Apple BCG, holds 940 FCC IDs. Each registration resolves to grants, test reports, manuals, photos and labels as PDFs, and RSS feeds list new applications without authentication.

Used together the two sources triangulate cleanly.
