What does an HPSA score lookup by address actually return?
When someone asks for "the HPSA score for this address," they can be standing inside three different designations at once. HRSA's Bureau of Health Workforce, Division of Policy and Shortage Designation publishes shortage areas per discipline - primary care, dental and mental health - and per geography type: facility-level designations, geographic HPSAs drawn down to census tracts, county rollups and state aggregates. Scores run 0 to 26 on the National Health Service Corps scale, and higher always means greater shortage. Sample extracts show how close the values sit: a Federally Qualified Health Center facility designation scoring 24 sits beside a High Needs Geographic HPSA scoring 25.
An address lookup therefore resolves twice. First it matches any facility HPSA pinned at that exact location; then it falls back to the geographic HPSA whose boundaries contain the point. Medically Underserved Areas and Populations form a separate designation family with its own IMU Score, carried in the 63-column MUA_DET.csv file, so a complete site report checks both families rather than assuming they agree.
Which HRSA tools look up an HPSA score by address?
Six mapping tools surround the HRSA Data Warehouse's file shelves - Build Your Own Map, Health Center Program GeoCare Navigator, HPSA Find, High Need Mapping Tool, Rural Health Grants Eligibility Analyzer and the Unmet Need Score Map Tool. Four entries on that portal plus one companion form the address-lookup toolkit:
- HPSA Find plots designations around a location so you can see which facility, tract and county HPSAs contain an address, filtered per discipline.
- Explore HPSAs browses the designation universe with filters rather than a map-first view, useful when you want the row behind the pin.
- MUA Find answers the parallel MUA/P question for the same address, returning underservice designations that HPSA lookups do not surface.
- Medicare Physician Bonus Payment Eligibility Analyzer tests an address against bonus-eligible designation geography, the reimbursement question recruiters ask right after the score.
- The batch address lookup accepts up to 200 addresses per submission, turning a spreadsheet of candidate sites into scored output in one pass.

How do I look up the HPSA score for a specific address?
Use the free tools on data.hrsa.gov: HPSA Find plots the designations containing an address, Explore HPSAs and MUA Find handle browsing and the MUA/P side, and the batch address lookup accepts up to 200 addresses per submission. Results carry the official 0-26 NHSC score per discipline, backed by daily-refreshed public-domain HRSA tables.
What is a high HPSA score for an address result?
Scores span 0 to 26 on the National Health Service Corps scale, and higher always means greater shortage. Sample extracts show a facility designation at 24 beside a High Needs Geographic HPSA at 25, near the top of the range. Because an address can fall inside a low-scoring geographic HPSA while hosting a high-scoring facility HPSA, read both before concluding.
Does the address lookup tell me about Medicare bonus eligibility?
Yes - separately from the score. The portal's Medicare Physician Bonus Payment Eligibility Analyzer tests an address against bonus-eligible designation geography, and shortage designation is the trigger investors and recruiters track for reimbursement tailwinds. Pull the same designation rows from the primary care mart to attach eligibility context to a whole address list rather than one site at a time.
