Market research data quality benchmarks: where the numbers come from

A data-quality benchmark is a published norm you can hold a supplier against — a removal rate, an adoption percentage, an accreditation status — rather than a promise on a capabilities deck. Of the 1,744 datasets Datadory catalogs, this industry contributes 12 primary records, and exactly one of them plays that survey-side role: the Insights Association, whose Global Data Quality (GDQ) benchmarking drew on 13 countries and nearly 1.8 million survey records in its H1 2026 edition. Its headline metrics are online-survey removal rates and link-encryption adoption, each broken out by agency, supplier, country and study type.

Everything else in the pool benchmarks something adjacent. GreenBook Directory scores suppliers through review counts and average ratings, Quirk's Directories exposes certifications and employee counts, and the Market Research Society (MRS) — UK publishes accreditation and industry-size aggregates. The distinction matters, because only one of these tells you how the industry's survey data actually behaves.

The Insights Association — the principal US trade association for market research, insights and data-analytics companies, representing more than 30,000 professionals from its Washington DC base — runs GDQ. Each edition reports the share of online survey respondents removed under quality screening and the share of surveyed links using encryption, segmented four ways: by agency, by supplier, by country and by study type. Those are the numbers an insights leader needs before debating a vendor's completion rates.

Access is the catch. GDQ results ship as HTML report pages and PDFs with no API and no bulk export, so collecting them means fetching documents individually. Some benchmarking reports and model contracts sit behind company membership, and neither membership tier publishes pricing outside the join flow. Freely readable alongside the benchmarks are the instruments that give them force: the Code of Standards, the Participant Bill of Rights, the Global Data Quality Excellence Pledge, the Council for Data Integrity and compliance toolkits covering GDPR, CCPA/CPRA and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Datadory scores the source 6 of 10 — the constraint is delivery, not authority.

Benchmarks tell you what normal looks like; vetting tells you whether a specific supplier clears the bar. A five-step pass built only from this pool's records:

1. Shortlist by specialty and geography in GreenBook Directory. Its 1,000+ verified profiles across 50+ countries classify against a roughly 397-item specialty taxonomy, and each listing carries review count, average rating and top-rated flags — the closest thing to a quality score suppliers expose.
2. Cross-check scale and credentials in Quirk's Directories. The US country page alone totals 362 firms paginated across 19 pages, and profile fields include employee count, year established and affiliations and certifications.
3. Confirm accredited standing in the Market Research Society (MRS) — UK Research Buyers Guide, which MRS positions as the only source of accredited research suppliers in the UK and Ireland, with a CEO Inclusion Pledge flag on signatories.
4. Verify the track record in USAspending.gov — Federal spending by NAICS by filtering awards to NAICS 5416 (management consulting) and 5417 (R&D services). The public API requires no authorization and place-of-performance geography reaches county level.
5. Compare reputation with Vault — Consulting Firm Rankings, whose annual practitioner survey scores 50 firms per list on prestige, culture, satisfaction, compensation and work/life balance.

Steps 1–3 test what a supplier claims, step 4 tests what it has actually done, and step 5 locates it in the talent market's esteem. Run the same five steps against two finalists and the comparison stops being a matter of pitch quality and becomes a matter of published evidence.

Accreditation claims are checkable, not decorative. MRS publishes the Code of Conduct, Binding Guidelines and MRS Guidance, and recognizes quality standards including IQCS and ISO 20252.
