Monthly Primary Aluminium Production by Country: Where the Data Lives

One body owns this question: the International Aluminium Institute, the global industry's official statistical organisation. Its statistics portal carries twelve recurring series of monthly primary aluminium and alumina production, and it aggregates output into ten reporting areas rather than one row per smelter. China is reported separately as "China (Estimated)" — that series starts later than the rest, from January 1999, while the other production series generally reach back to January 1973.

No government statistical agency publishes a comparable global monthly series. Government sources enter at the annual level, which is why a serious country-level production workflow usually pairs the two.

Three things matter before you build on it.

Regions, not countries, for most series. The ten reporting areas aggregate national reporting into regional blocks; only the by-country power consumption series adds per-country detail. If your model needs a specific country's monthly smelter output, IAI gives you the region containing it plus estimated China as its own line.

Depth. Production series generally start January 1973, with estimated China from 01/1999 — roughly five decades of monthly observations across ten reporting regions in twelve recurring series.

A repeatable pipeline takes five steps:

1. Pull the IAI monthly series for the ten reporting areas from International Aluminium Institute Statistics, keeping the estimated-China line separate since it starts in 01/1999.
2. Anchor each region annually with the 13-country production table in USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries - Aluminum, so regional monthly totals can be decomposed against named producers.
3. Add capacity context from the USGS Mineral Yearbook chapters, which list facility-level US smelter capacity and world production by country.
4. Overlay North American detail from The Aluminum Association - Industry Statistics: 25+ report series on US, Canadian and combined North American orders, shipments, capacity, production and UBC recycling, with a free Excel workbook spanning 1998 through May 2023 (about 380 monthly rows per country block).

Step 4 matters because the Aluminum Association is the only source giving North American monthly production at sub-regional granularity — IAI reports the area, USGS reports the year.

Production rarely moves alone, and three cataloged sources triangulate it.

Trade flows. USA Trade Online (US Census Bureau) queries HS chapter 76 imports and exports by partner country, US state, customs district and port, monthly from January 2002 (annually from 1992).
