NAICS 42 Codes List: Every Wholesale Trade Code, Mapped to Its Data

The NAICS 42 codes list is the wholesale trade sector of the North American Industry Classification System: every code used to classify US merchant wholesalers, the businesses that sell goods bought for resale without transformation. The most complete browsable version in Datadory's distributors slice is the NAICS Association - NAICS 42 Wholesale Trade Code Directory, a single HTML page of about 240 KB that lays out the entire tree in one view - the sector overview distinguishing merchant wholesalers from agents and brokers, then three subsectors, their 4-digit industry groups, and each group's 6-digit national industries.

Scale first. The directory observes 697,201 US business locations classified under sector 42, spread across roughly 70 wholesale-trade codes shown on the sector page and about 1,000 linked 6-digit description pages site-wide. Browsing requires no registration, and because the NAICS system itself is a US government standard free of copyright, the classification logic can be reused freely even though the page's presentation remains proprietary to NAICS Association LLC.

The tree forks immediately into three subsectors. Durable Goods Merchant Wholesalers (423) carries nine 4-digit groups whose counts add to 422,387 locations; Nondurable Goods Merchant Wholesalers (424) carries another nine adding to 273,682; and Wholesale Electronic Markets and Agents and Brokers (425) shows its 4251 line at 1,132. Together the nineteen observed lines reconcile exactly to the directory's 697,201 sector total.

Five levels of precision sit under the sector heading, and the same code reads differently at each one. Take the computer-equipment branch: sector 42 narrows to subsector 423 (Durable Goods, 3-digit), then industry group 4238 (Machinery, Equipment & Supplies, 4-digit), then national industry 42343 (Computer & Computer Peripheral Equipment, 5-digit), which lands at 6-digit national industry 423430 - the exact code County Business Patterns uses when it reports establishment counts for computer and peripheral equipment merchant wholesalers.

Different sources stop at different rungs, which is why a codes list alone is not enough. Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey (MWTS) - Sales & Inventories is the monthly engine. It reports national merchant wholesaler sales, end-of-month inventories and inventories-to-sales ratios by NAICS 42 kind of business - Total Merchant Wholesalers (42), Durable Goods (423), Nondurable Goods (424) and component industries such as Motor Vehicle & Parts (4231), Grocery & Related Products (4244), Drugs & Druggists' Sundries (4242) and Petroleum & Petroleum Products (4247). History runs from January 1992 in three Excel workbooks of roughly 180 KB each, holding about 430 monthly rows across 22-24 columns per measure sheet. It is the only quality-score-10 source in this industry slice - one of just 145 perfect scores among the 1,744 datasets Datadory catalogs against a 7.81 average - and its estimates feed quarterly GDP calculation.

A codes list becomes a prospecting asset when you walk it top-down:

1. Pick the subsector that matches your product. Physical equipment points to 423; consumables and consumption-driven categories to 424; marketplace and broker models to 425.
2. Rank the 4-digit groups by entity count. Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (4238, 105,269 locations) and Miscellaneous Nondurable Goods (4249, 104,975) are the two largest pools; Metal & Mineral except Petroleum (4235, 14,015) and Paper (4241, 11,879) are among the narrowest.
3. Drop to the 6-digit description pages for definitions, per-code US entity counts and the linked company-search tools - roughly 1,000 such pages exist site-wide.
4. Crosswalk legacy records with the footer's NAICS-to-SIC references before merging older CRM data.
5. Size the niche against official benchmarks: MWTS monthly inventories-to-sales ratios by kind of business, or Economic Census counts like the 34,604 grocery wholesale establishments and 621,911 employees recorded for 2022.
6. Automate the pull through the Census Bureau Data API (free key required) when territory sizing needs county or ZIP-code cuts by 6-digit code.
