National Park Visitation Statistics Data: Dataset Structure and Field Coverage

National park visitation statistics are the official counts of recreational trips to units of the US National Park Service, published through the NPS Visitor Use Statistics system (IRMA Stats) on the IRMA Portal. The series covers 400-plus reporting park units and reaches back to 1904 - roughly 120 years of annual records per unit - which makes it the longest time-series in the Leisure Facilities slice Datadory catalogs: 16 primary datasets out of 1,744 cataloged overall.

Three breakpoints matter when you load it. Standardized reporting starts in 1979, traffic counts begin in 1985, and visitation-by-state-and-park reporting starts in 2017. Monthly detail exists where parks report it, and records sit at park-unit-by-year granularity, aggregable by park type, region and state.

The National Reports menu at irma.nps.gov/STATS enumerates more than a dozen named reports, each pinned to its own coverage window. The list below reflects the report registry read during Datadory's August 2026 research. Treat the start years as hard filters when you automate, because pulling from the 1904-era reports behaves differently from the post-1979 standardized set, and the two historic query builders exist precisely to bridge that gap.

Two reports matter most for long-run work. Annual Visitation and Record Year by Park spans the full 1904-to-last-calendar-year window and carries record-year identification and ranking, while the Statistical Abstract covers the same 1904 window and bundles the Recreation Visitation Forecasting Report. For anything after 1979, the Annual Park Ranking Report and the park-type and region aggregations give you the standardized era on a consistent basis.

Reports ship through an embedded SSRS Report Viewer, and the export path is the same for national and single-park views:

1. Open irma.nps.gov/STATS and choose National Reports for service-wide series or Park Reports scoped to one unit.
2. Pick the report whose coverage window matches your study period - Annual Visitation and Record Year by Park for the full 1904 series, Overnight Stays National for lodging, camping and backcountry splits.
3. Set filters in the query builders where offered: park, year, region or stay type.
4. Use the SSRS toolbar to export to Excel or CSV (PDF is among the formats).
5. For scripted pulls, reuse the underlying report path exposed by the viewer iframe (/IRMA Prod/STATS/National Reports/...) and append rs:Format=CSV or rs:Format=EXCEL.

The analytical core is small and stable: park name and unit code, year, and the visit count. UnitCode is the join key - "Yellowstone NP" pairs with the code yell - and RecreationVisits is the headline integer. Around it sit three secondary measures: overnight stays broken down by type of stay (lodging, camping, backcountry), annual traffic volume counts collected from 1985 forward, and record-year identification and ranking of visitation within the series.

Because granularity is per park unit per year, a service-wide annual total is an aggregation you build yourself across the 400-plus reporting units - or pull ready-made from the Annual Summary Report (1979 - Present) rather than summing raw rows.

By pairing the demand series with an outcome series. The BEA Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account (ORSA) - National & State is the official measure of the US outdoor recreation economy: the March 2026 release reports 2024 value added of $696.7 billion, equal to 2.4 percent of current-dollar GDP, with state GDP shares running from 6.1 percent in Hawaii down to 1.0 percent in the District of Columbia. Activities broken out include boating, fishing, RVing, hunting/shooting, camping, hiking/climbing and bicycling, so visitation trends for park-based trips line up against the camping and hiking rows specifically. Tables span 2012 to 2024 across roughly five national XLSX files (ores0326- prefixed), one state file and a 51-jurisdiction PDF workbook bundle, all commercial delivery terms, with the next release scheduled for Fall 2026.

The visitation series itself earns its keep as a demand proxy: rising park visitation has long tracked sales of camping, hiking and paddling equipment, which is why product teams and retail analysts watch it. The Statistical Abstract's Recreation Visitation Forecasting Report extends that use case with forward-looking projections on the same 1904 base.

Is there a UK equivalent? No direct counterpart exists in the slice. Britain's nearest analogues measure different things: Sport England's Moving Communities platform streams leisure-centre performance in real time since March 2021, Active Lives surveys capture roughly 175,000-plus respondents annually since 2015-16, and OS Open Greenspace supplies the physical layer with 165,978 sites and 355,705 access points in its April 2026 release. For visitation-style tourism counts outside the US federal system, data.gov.uk's National Data Library indexes 4,540 results down to local-authority granularity.
