North Sea Well Log Data: Dataset Structure and Field Coverage
Datadory delivers north sea well log data covering comprehensive field definitions, entity mappings, and historical time series — structured for direct analytics and delivered on demand.
1,744 datasets. Pick your catch.
Which dataset should you pull first?
Ranked by how quickly they put log files on your disk:
What formats will you actually receive?
Well logs travel as depth-indexed curve files: LAS for ASCII-friendly workloads, DLIS and LIS for richer or legacy wireline suites. The UK National Data Repository lists LAS and DLIS among its standard deliverables, NLOG distributes LAS and LIS alongside TIFF-scanned reports, and Volve adds SEG-Y seismic plus RMS reservoir-model grids and CSV production tables on top of its log files. The Hutton Field 'Oilfield in a Box' archive from BGS covers the full spread in one package - LAS, LIS, DLIS, SEGY, TIFF, PDF and ASCII for 65 wells.
Format breadth is the exception rather than the rule in this slice. Of the 23 primary datasets Datadory catalogs for integrated oil & gas, 11 ship XLSX and 10 ship CSV; only the operator releases reach into LAS, LIS, DLIS, SEG-Y and Parquet territory. Plan for format conversion as part of the job, not an afterthought.
How do confidentiality windows change what you can get?
Practical consequence: the newest wells are exactly the ones you cannot bulk-grab. For current drilling, expect to wait out the window; for anything older than five years, the regulatory tier has usually already released it.
What can you learn from wellbore tables before requesting any logs?
Treat these tables as your index layer: total depth, spud date, operator, status and purpose for each borehole, all before any registration form. The Dutch portal mirrors the pattern with per-borehole records plus monthly production and injection tables for every Dutch field since January 2003.
How do you assemble a working stack step by step?
A repeatable sequence for a subsurface study on the basin:
| Attribute | Equinor Volve Open Field Dataset | NLOG Netherlands Oil & Gas Portal | NSTA National Data Repository (NDR) | Norwegian Offshore Directorate FactPages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sea sector | Norwegian (blocks 15/9) | Dutch continental shelf + onshore | UKCS | Norwegian shelf (North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Barents) |
| Temporal reach | Field life Feb 2008 - shutdown 2016 | Logs released after 5-year confidentiality window | Continuous statutory archive; monthly disclosure notifications | Wellbores from the 1960s onward; synchronized daily |
| Scale marker | ~40,000 files, multi-terabyte bundle | Thousands of borehole records | ~1.6 PB archive commonly cited | ~140 fields, ~700 discoveries, several thousand wellbores |
| Datadory quality score | 8 of 10 | 7 of 10 | 8 of 10 | 10 of 10 |
