Where is the official NRF top 100 retailers list published?
The ranking lives as browsable HTML tables on the National Retail Federation's Research & Insights portal, with one edition per year; prior editions back to 2020 stay linked for time-series work. NRF publishes three company rankings a year, all compiled by Kantar: the Top 100 US retailers by domestic retail sales (early July), the Hot 25 fastest-growing retailers by year-over-year domestic sales growth (early August) and the Top 50 Global Retailers (also early August). That is 175 ranked companies per year across the three lists. NRF also commissions the PwC economic contribution study, which put the industry at $5.3 trillion in GDP contribution and 55 million US jobs in its March 2024 edition.
Who tops the 2026 NRF top 100 retailers list?
Walmart leads the 2026 ranking at $575.99 billion in past-52/53-week US retail sales - roughly twice Amazon.com's $293.85 billion in second place. Costco Wholesale holds third at $198.73 billion, The Kroger Co. fourth at $154.74 billion and The Home Depot fifth at $141.12 billion. Each entry carries seven fields: rank, company, headquarters location, prior-year US retail sales in billions, US sales growth versus the prior year, US share of worldwide sales, and editorial notes covering ownership changes or reclassifications.
The 2026 edition also draws category boundaries differently than its predecessors: restaurant chains are excluded for the first time, which shifts several positions relative to older lists you may have archived. Specialty categories remain well represented despite that cut, with Chewy (#40) and Petco (#79) in pet, Hobby Lobby (#62) and Michaels (#84) in craft, and Staples (#75) in office supply among the ranked entrants.
What fields does each Top 100 entry include, and how is it compiled?
Kantar builds the list under its Retail IQ methodology across more than 1,000 accounts and 4,000+ banners, drawing on public disclosures rather than company submissions. Sales are measured on a past 52/53-week fiscal basis, exclude non-retail revenue and, where fuel is the primary business, exclude fuel sales. Kantar states the compilation is proprietary market research commissioned by NRF and is explicitly not guaranteed to match company filings - worth checking before you reconcile a rank against a 10-K. Companies can submit corrections through a Kantar contact email listed on the ranking page.
How do the Hot 25 and Top 50 Global lists differ from the Top 100?
Use the three lists together rather than alone. A retailer outside the Top 100 can sit near the top of the Hot 25 on growth; a chain absent from the Top 50 Global may still be enormous but domestically concentrated. Each Top 50 Global entry adds home country, total company revenues in billions and total worldwide store count to the standard columns.
Which datasets turn the ranking into an analysis workflow?
A rank tells you who is big; the surrounding datasets tell you whether that size is holding. Four pairings cover most requests:
For cross-border revenue comparisons beyond retail, Fortune's Fortune Global 500 ranking covers the world's 500 largest corporations by consolidated revenue, though it mixes industries rather than isolating retail.

Two sibling posts extend this one: the Target TCIN product data guide shows how to key Target.com listings for assortment work once a rank points you at a competitor, and the broadline retail data hub indexes every dataset page in the industry. For shortlists, the best broadline-retail datasets and free broadline-retail datasets pages rank the pool by quality score.
