How Market Researchers Use Oil & Gas Equipment Services Data

An oilfield equipment and services brief rarely asks for one number. A typical engagement stacks four jobs: size the supplier and service universe, locate the installed asset base a client sells into, time the installation and decommissioning cycles that drive rigless-services demand, and benchmark operator-side performance such as contractor safety. Each job has a different canonical publisher, and a methodology review goes badly when a vendor marketing estimate is cited where a regulator or research agency publishes the underlying series.

Two provenance notes belong in your methodology annex. The compilation draws on public-domain sources dated on or prior to April 2024, with the Earth Engine snapshot fixed at 2024-05-15 and roughly half of well records sourced after 1 April 2024. And the open release excludes around 300 Russian gas compressor stations, so downstream or midstream totals for Russia are understated by design rather than by error.

For offshore equipment and abandonment-services demand, DLR's OPD - Offshore Platform Dataset answers the question vendors usually charge for. Derived from Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar, it tracks 3,739 platforms across the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Persian Gulf at quarterly presence resolution from 2017Q1 through 2025Q1 - 33 quarters in a release of just 50.2 MB across six files, the largest being the 45.3 MB per-quarter GeoJSON. Every feature carries water depth, distance to coast and exclusive economic zone attribution covering the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Norway, Saudi Arabia and Iran, among others.

The Railroad Commission of Texas - Well Information is the workhorse for US onshore sizing because it covers every Texas county - all 254, organized into RRC districts 01-10 - at wellbore level through the EWA query systems for wellbores, proration, injection and orphan wells. Production queries reach back to January 1993, monthly well distribution tables run from January 2014 to July 2026, and the orphan-well list is refreshed monthly with thousands of wells listed each cycle.

Handle the caveats explicitly. Granularity stops at regional and environment-level aggregates, with no rig-level or company-level data published, the submissions are unaudited, and reproduction beyond internal reports requires written permission. Cite the program for directional comparisons across regions and years, not for absolute rate claims about a named contractor.
