Which fields carry the analytical work?
Article records ride underneath with their own spine - DOI, journal linkage, author list, abstract, page numbers and content type - so a title can be counted and its actual output weighed inside the same delivery.
The classic mistake lives in the commercial layer: reading a blank APC amount as a gap in the data. It is a statement about the journal. Filter on the charge flag first, then compare chargers and no-fee titles as two populations.
Which numbers fall out of the table that nobody else publishes?
Run honestly, none of these require decoding a coded category, reconciling two editions of the same column or stitching three partial pulls together - because the rows arrive already shaped.
Who works with this data, and for what?
Ranked by relevance in Datadory's persona tagging:
Competitive intelligence and product teams (relevance 2) track rivals' journal counts, prices and preservation status over scheduled captures.
Developers and builders (relevance 2) get a stable, fully documented journal schema behind identity plumbing. Sales & growth teams and investors & quant researchers both tag relevance 1 - prospecting journals that levy charges, and reading charge distributions when assessing open-access business-model shifts.
Where should you start?
Start with the anchor record, DOAJ API - Directory of Open Access Journals, sampled to your markets and subject areas before anything is committed. Product-level detail - sample rows, the full field dictionary with definitions and worked examples, coverage chips for geography, temporal span and granularity - lives on its dataset page.
This page is one thread of a wider map. The Publishing Data Guide walks the sixteen-record slice, the 10 best publishing datasets ranks the leaders side by side, and the publishing data hub indexes every record with its coverage statement.

How many open access journals does the dataset cover?
23,352 journal records carrying 13,470,084 article records, from publishers in more than 130 countries, read live during the August 21, 2026 research pass. New titles apply, get reviewed and either tick or decline continuously, so treat both figures as a floor - current totals ship with every sample.
