Silver Mine Production by Country: Data, Coverage and Caveats

Two free records carry the country-level rankings, and they differ in shape. USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2025 - Silver is a two-page PDF issued every January by the USGS National Minerals Information Center, with a world mine production and reserves table covering a world total plus 14 named producers: United States, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, China, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia and Sweden, along with an Other countries line. Quantities are metric tons of silver content.

Silver Institute - Silver Supply & Demand statistics adapts the trade body's World Silver Survey 2025 into a Top 20 Producing Countries table and a Top 20 Producing Companies table - deeper coverage, but published as JPG images rather than data files. For resolution below country level, the USGS Silver Statistics and Information (hub) issues monthly Mineral Industry Surveys that split United States output between Nevada and all other states.

The world table carries two production columns - 2023 actual and 2024 estimated - plus a reserves column, for 15 countries and a world total. The four rows captured during catalog verification show the shape of the data:

Rank and reserve base do not move together. Peru sits third of the four on output but holds the largest reserves figure at 140,000 metric tons, more than triple Mexico's 37,000. The United States is the only one of the four with an upward revision, rising 80 metric tons to an estimated 1,100.

The domestic narrative adds texture the table cannot: 2024 US mine output of roughly 1,100 tons was valued at about $960 million and came from 4 silver mines plus byproduct recovery at 31 base- and precious-metal operations across 12 states, with Alaska and Idaho the leading states.

The same global output arrives in two incompatible units. USGS reports metric tons of silver content for 2023 and 2024e across its 14-country table; the Silver Institute reports million troy ounces (Moz) and puts 2024 global mine production up 0.9 percent to 819.7 Moz, with Mexico the leading producer followed by China, Peru, Bolivia and Chile.

Provenance overlaps rather than duplicates. USGS cites Metals Focus World Silver Survey for global consumption, and the Institute prepares that same survey with Metals Focus, the London-based metals research firm - so the two layers share a research lineage while differing in unit, country depth and release timing.

Two complements round out the geography. The National Mineral Resource Assessment 1998 package estimates undiscovered gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc deposits in the United States, and the USGS country tables reach beyond the usual suspects to producers including Poland, Kazakhstan and Sweden.

1. Pull the current chapter. A direct HTTP GET on the MCS 2025 silver PDF returns HTTP 200 at about 745 KB - two pages, no registration or key - and extracts cleanly with pdftotext -layout.
2. Backfill prior years. Prior editions follow the predictable pattern mcsYYYY/mcsYYYY-silver.pdf, verified back to mcs2020, and the hub lists annual chapters from 1996 through 2025 for deeper histories.
3. Add the Moz layer. Transcribe or OCR the Silver Institute Top 20 Producing Countries and Companies tables from their JPG images, keeping the World Silver Survey 2025 attribution.
4. Wire in US monthlies. Walk the hub's Mineral Industry Surveys links - the hub page itself sits behind an AWS WAF JavaScript challenge for automated clients, but the linked d9-wret S3 files are plain GETs - and strip footnote letters from XLSX cells with the embedded RemoveTextButton helper before calculating.
5. Join the price spine. Merge the Pink Sheet monthly silver column onto production years for constant-2010 dollar comparisons, citing "World Bank Commodity Price Data (The Pink Sheet)".
