Which BLS series turn the weekly signal into a backtestable dataset?

  • BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) — quality score 9, monthly from December 2000 to the latest reference month, about 2,061 series and roughly 376,000 rows in the current text file. National totals run by industry and size class, with estimates for all 50 states and DC at the total nonfarm level. Formats: TXT, CSV and JSON.
  • BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), Employment Services NAICS 5613 — quality score 10, the highest in the slice. County, MSA, state and national establishments, employment and wages covered by state UI laws; the Q1 2025 NAICS 5613 slice alone holds 3,623 rows, and archive files reach back to 1990. CSV and ZIP, released about three months after each quarter closes.
  • BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) — quality score 9, 413,528 rows across 32 columns in the May 2025 all-data file, spanning about 830 occupations including HR managers, HR specialists and recruiters across roughly 530 areas, with nine wage percentiles per row.

A typical construction: regress the weekly index against monthly JOLTS temporary-help openings, confirm level shifts against quarterly QCEW NAICS 5613 employment, and explain wage-driven margin changes with OEWS percentiles. Every input in that chain is downloadable without an account.
