Which feed flags a rival's move into the US market first?
For India, the counterpart is Steel Import Management System (SIMS) data: monthly transaction-level Excel files running to roughly 42,000 rows per month, covering ITC(HS) chapters 72, 73 and 86 from October 2019 through October 2025 as published at research time. Read the fine print before redistributing - the SIMS PDF reports carry an explicit not-for-public-distribution notice, and the Excel rows are importer declarations, not verified customs outcomes. Diff the files month over month by origin country and spec, and a competitor's sourcing switch shows up within one cycle.
What do weekly production releases reveal about capacity discipline?
Utilization is the tell for capacity discipline. AISI Industry Data publishes weekly US raw steel production and capability utilization across five districts - North East, Great Lakes, Midwest, Southern and Western - six figures per week, current within days. A rival running hot while its home district cools is taking share; sustained low utilization usually precedes the margin excuses. Monthly shipment and SIMA import releases sit alongside, but the detailed AIS 7 report is subscription-only through S&P Global, and the Annual Statistical Report sells through the same channel - deep history is paywalled by design.
Europe and Japan supply the monthly depth. Eurostat's EU steel & basic-metals production statistics (dissemination API) serves the NACE C24 production index from January 1953 to the current month as JSON-stat, SDMX-ML, CSV, TSV and Excel under commercial delivery terms 4.0, with no registration or integration key; 23 geographies carried C24 monthly data in the recent months our research tested.
Why does change detection need a baseline before it needs alerts?
An alert with no baseline is noise. Load the long series first so deviations become legible - and steel is unusually rich in them, with seven of the 23 primary datasets scoring a perfect quality 9 in Datadory's tagging against a catalog-wide average of 7.81 out of 10 across all 1,744 datasets.
How do you assemble a steel competitor-alerting stack?
Here is the sequence we would run, tuned for a two-person analytics pod:
- Overlay weekly capacity. Parse AISI's weekly district production and utilization figures the same day they post. A competitor district running against the national trend is a share-shift story worth a slide.
- Run the price watch. Subscribe to SteelBenchmarker's free email (assume a one-day delay as a non-provider), scan SteelMint headlines daily, and archive every release locally so you own the history the vendors gate.
- Schedule the regional depth pass monthly. JISF workbooks for Japanese orders and inventories, the Ministry of Steel Monthly Summary for India's production and consumption, WV Stahl PDFs for Germany. Fifteen minutes each, once a month, closes the international picture.
