A working pattern: size the terrestrial side of a connectivity or infrastructure play with Eurostat permit and production series, then characterise the orbit side — crowding, conjunction risk, catalog age — with SATCAT records and SOCRATES Plus reports.

Two cautions straight from the records. There is no shared key, so treat them as two parallel feeds rather than one joinable table — any bridge is business logic you supply. Better depends on the question. Eurostat wins on economic signal: a harmonised monthly construction production index from 1990 across EU, EFTA and candidate countries, plus building permits by dwelling type. CelesTrak wins on physical ground truth: roughly 70,355 tracked objects, 35,000 with current elements, history back to 1957. Sample both, pick by fit.

Do the two datasets cover the same geography?

Only in the loosest sense. Eurostat covers EU member states, EFTA members, candidate countries and the EU27_2020 and EA20 aggregates — Earth's surface, subdivided by border. CelesTrak covers all tracked Earth-orbiting objects regardless of operator country — the shell above it, subdivided by altitude and inclination. Neither can stand in for the other.

How do their time dimensions differ?

Eurostat is a continuous panel: monthly production observations from 1990 in adjusted and unadjusted forms, annual permit series reaching further back. CelesTrak mixes currents and archives: element sets maintained for active objects, SATCAT records stretching to Sputnik 1 in 1957, event reports issued as breakups and reentries occur. Which dataset has the more usable field structure?

Eurostat, and it is not close today. Its nine fields — frequency, indicator, NACE activity, adjustment flag, unit, building type, geography, period, value — were all verified against live queries during research. CelesTrak's portal publishes no unified schema; each child family documents its own columns, so plan on mapping roles per sub-dataset.

Can one dataset replace the other for a construction-industry project?

Only if your definition of construction stretches to orbital hardware. For constellation, ground-station or debris work, Eurostat contributes context at best. They are complements sharing an industry tag by catalog accident. Request both samples and decide with rows in hand.
