Best for Who traded what with whom, at what value and weight — the agri-trade network How land and labor perform across economies — the agri-fundamentals panel

Or take both in one feed

They stack as fundamentals plus flows. Anchor capacity on the World Bank record — yield trajectory, irrigated share, fertilizer intensity, agricultural employment for the exporters you care about. Then read the outcomes on the Comtrade record — whether those capacities show up as growing export lanes, shifting partner shares or widening CIF–FOB gaps on specific HS lines.

Join discipline, not luck: align geographies once (ISO3 sits cleanly on both sides even though Comtrade's native keys are numeric UN codes); aggregate Comtrade's six-digit chapters 01–24 into commodity groups before matching them against 49 sector-level indicators — the WDI topic will never resolve to a single HS line; respect the unit systems (dollars, kilograms and tonnes against kg-per-hectare, index points and percent); and mind the edges — some reporters lag in Comtrade, some economies report late or not at all in individual WDI series, so intersect your usable period before building panels.

Worked example: rank Sub-Saharan economies by cereal-yield growth in the WDI topic, then use Comtrade Plus to check which of them turned that growth into cereal exports — and to which partners. One desk, two dictionaries, no forced choice. Or take both in one feed — delivered together, on the cadence you set.

Fair questions

Is UN Comtrade Plus better than World Bank – Agriculture & Rural Development Indicators?

Different instruments, tied on quality — both rate 9 out of 10 with verified field definitions. Comtrade Plus counts what crosses borders: who sold what to whom, at what value, weight and unit, commodity by commodity down to six-digit HS codes. The WDI Agriculture & Rural Development topic measures how land and labor perform: cereal yield, production indices, fertilizer intensity, irrigated land, rural population. Flows favor Comtrade; fundamentals favor the World Bank record.

Which dataset covers more geography?

They cover nearly the same world differently. Comtrade Plus carries roughly 200 reporting countries against every partner area including a World aggregate; the WDI topic spans 217 economies plus regional and income aggregates such as Africa Eastern and Southern. The difference is direction: Comtrade's rows are directed flows between two places, while each WDI row is one economy observed over time.

Which goes further back in time?

Both reach into the early 1960s. Comtrade Plus annual series start in 1962, subject to each reporter's own history; the WDI agriculture series generally begin in 1961, with US cereal yield running 3,155 kg per hectare in 1970 to 8,413.5 in 2024 on a single continuous line. Depth per country belongs to neither by default — check your reporters against your indicators before committing either to a long-run model.

Do the two datasets report the same agricultural number?

No, and mixing them up distorts models. Comtrade reports bilateral trade: China's 2022 imports of HS 10 cereals were $19.45 billion from the World aggregate and $92 from Slovakia alone. The WDI topic reports domestic fundamentals: cereal yield in kg per hectare, production indices on a 2014-2016 base, fertilizer consumption per hectare of arable land. Trade volume versus productive capacity — different numerators, different denominators.

Which should an agri-food analyst sample first?

Sample both, pick by fit. Start with the WDI topic when the question is about supply capacity, land productivity or rural structure across economies. Either record samples on request.
