What is the Eurostat Production in Construction Index?

What should I know before requesting a sample?
Three things worth knowing upfront.
First, this is an index, not a quantity. A reading of 110.8 means output sits 10.8 percent above its 2021 average level; it never tells you tonnage, euros or square metres. If your model needs physical volumes, say so in the sample request and we will scope the matching tonnage sources alongside.
Second, treat the series as confirmed history rather than a nowcast. June 2026 is the latest reference month in the current extract, and revisions are part of the deal with any short-term indicator - pin your extract vintage if you re-run comparisons across releases.
Third, the grid is sparse by design. Some country-and-activity combinations return empty value sets - Germany paired with the condensed buildings code is a documented case - so check availability before assuming a complete matrix, and treat absence as a reporting fact rather than a zero.

What does the production in construction index actually measure?
Changes in the price-adjusted output of construction, intended to reflect the sector's monthly volume value added. Where direct output measurement runs thin it is approximated by deflated gross production or by inputs of labour and raw materials - so it reads activity, not invoices, permits or square metres completed.

What is the difference between the F, F41, F42 and F43 activity codes?
F is all construction. F41 isolates construction of buildings, F42 civil engineering, and F43 specialised construction activities - the trades that follow the shell rather than build it. Two condensed codes re-cut the same sector into F_CC1 buildings and F_CC2 civil engineering works, giving a clean buildings-versus-infrastructure split.
Why are there three seasonal-adjustment variants?
Every series ships as NSA (unadjusted), CA (calendar adjusted, not seasonally adjusted) and SCA (seasonally and calendar adjusted) side by side. Use SCA to read the underlying trend month over month, CA when working-day patterns matter, and NSA when modelling the raw seasonal pattern itself. Swap variants without touching anything else about the query.
Is the index a physical quantity?
No - it is an index, not tonnes or euros. A reading of 110.8 on the 2021=100 base means output sits 10.8% above its 2021 average level. Percentage-change measures against the previous period (PCH_PRE) and the same month a year earlier (PCH_SM) arrive computed alongside the index bases, so no derived-column maintenance on your side.
Is every country and activity combination populated?
No. The matrix is deliberately sparse: some country-and-activity pairings return empty value sets - Germany against the buildings code is a documented example - so check availability before assuming a complete grid. Absence means not reported here, which is information rather than noise once you plan for it.
Can the index be compared across countries directly?
Yes - that is the point of the harmonization. All 33 geographies report against the same NACE classification and the same rebased units (2010, 2015 and 2021 = 100), so a ratio between France and Poland is legitimate arithmetic. Series length differs by country, which is a start-date question, not a definition question.
