What can you train on US federal education panels?
Six federal sources cover most tabular needs, every one commercial delivery terms. College Scorecard publishes ~6,000 institutions per year file with 3,308 documented variables; the full archive is 470 MB zipped, covering 1996-97 through 2025-26. The Common Core of Data supplies the K-12 counterpart - 102,274 school rows in the 2023-24 directory with files back to 1986-87. CRDC layers biennial indicators onto those NCES IDs for ~17,800 districts and ~97,000 schools per wave.
Two narrower panels round it out: Federal Student Aid's Title IV files (quarterly portfolios from Q1 2014) and Clery Act campus-crime data (5,585 institutions, 10,110 campuses per year).
Which APIs feed live education pipelines?
Seven of the 15 records expose an API callable from a notebook. Eurostat exposes its 156 EDUC dataflows as SDMX-JSON; Data.gov's catalog API returns DCAT-US metadata for programmatic discovery; Data USA's Tesseract API serves jsonrecords, CSV or Parquet; the IPEDS Trend Generator backs preset questions with JSON.
Where does text and learning-analytics training data come from?
For token-level work rather than aggregates, Hugging Face Datasets hosts 1,862 repos matching the 'education' search at research time - tutoring dialogues and knowledge-tracing logs. Formats run to Parquet, CSV, JSON, Arrow and text, and the datasets library streams shards so a corpus bigger than local disk stays trainable.
What about education data outside the United States?
Three sources extend features beyond the US. Eurostat's EDUC_UOE_ENRA02 enrolment table covers 2012-2024, expenditure series reach further back, all commercial delivery terms 4.0 and daily-refreshed. England's Explore Education Statistics lists 23 titles on page one of its API index alone - pupil absence spans 2006/07 to 2024/25 - under OGL v3.0.
Cadence varies sharply across the wider catalog: 22.6% of the 1,744 datasets Datadory catalogs, and 27.8% refresh at least weekly.
Straight answers
Can I build a financial time series from education data for backtesting-style work?
Yes - through money flows rather than markets. The Federal Student Aid Data Center publishes quarterly loan-portfolio files from Q1 2014 onward plus award-year disbursement volumes keyed by OPE ID, giving a long panel for credit and repayment modeling. College Scorecard contributes earnings and debt outcomes per cohort, and IPEDS adds finance-survey components annually.
Where can I get training data for student-outcome or equity models?
Join the Civil Rights Data Collection's discipline and AP-access rates (~17,800 districts, ~97,000 schools per biennial wave) to CCD demographics on stable NCES IDs, then append College Scorecard outcomes for postsecondary ground truth. The Education Data Explorer serves the same joins pre-harmonized, with 246 GB of bulk CSVs if you prefer local training.
What alternative data suits quantitative research on education?
Non-obvious angles: OpenAlex's commercial delivery terms scholarly graph (~322M works, daily REST refresh) for education-research trends, Hugging Face tutoring-dialogue and knowledge-tracing repositories for behavioral signal, Clery Act campus-crime panels (5,585 institutions per year) for risk indices, and Eurostat's EU27 enrolment series as cross-country macro covariates. Each moves independently of the standard NCES tables.
Is any of this education data restricted for commercial reuse?
Almost none. Ten of the 15 sources are US government works in the commercial delivery terms and OpenAlex dedicates itself to commercial delivery terms.
