Because alumina-production consumes bauxite directly, reserve estimates set the long-run ceiling on refinery planning - which is why both publishers revise them annually rather than continuously.

Reserve numbers move supply contracts. A refiner sizing a 20-year alumina commitment, or an investor screening guinea- or australian-weighted supply chains, is really buying a view of these estimates; if the estimate is stale or aggregated at the wrong level, every downstream capacity conclusion inherits the error.

The grain matters as much as the vintage. A single USGS national total cannot tell you whether an Indian state's leases are depleting - only the IBM inventory's state-level breakdowns can. Conversely, IBM covers India alone, so any global statement needs the USGS series next to it. Buyers who merge the two without noting the different grains end up double-counting Indian deposits, and buyers who quote either without a date attach last decade's geology to this year's market.
