Glossary
cart abandonment
Cart abandonment describes shoppers adding items to a cart without completing the purchase. It becomes directly measurable when clickstream logs distinguish event types - the multi-category eCommerce Behavior dataset records view, cart, remove_from_cart and purchase events separately, so abandonment is computed rather than inferred.
What is cart abandonment in event data?
It is a gap between two logged events. The eCommerce Behavior Data from Multi-Category Store (Apparel Segment) defines its granularity as "view/cart/remove_from_cart/purchase" event types, with a short_description of "views, cart adds, removals and purchases".
Because removals log separately, the dataset distinguishes deliberate abandonment (remove events) from passive abandonment (cart items left unpurchased) - a distinction aggregate conversion rates erase entirely.
Why does cart abandonment matter when choosing a dataset?
Intervention design depends on mechanism. Recovery emails target passive abandoners; merchandising fixes target active removers who rejected price or selection. Datasets logging only purchases cannot tell the difference, capping analytical value.
Event-taxonomy completeness is therefore the buying criterion: confirm view, add, remove and purchase events all exist with timestamps and session identifiers. Apparel-segment behaviour also travels poorly - return-heavy categories show distinctive cart patterns, so benchmarks borrowed from other verticals mislead. Session-scoped computation beats cookie-based windows wherever privacy rules truncate tracking lifetimes.
How do you evaluate cart abandonment data in a source?
- “Verify the four event types. ”View, cart, remove_from_cart and purchase events must exist separately for clean measurement.
- “Check session identifiers. ”Abandonment requires linking cart adds to session ends.
- “Separate active from passive abandonment. ”Removal events mark rejection; silence marks drift.
- “Mind category context. ”Apparel-segment logs behave differently from grocery or electronics - benchmark accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
How is cart abandonment measured in event data?
By contrasting cart-add events with purchase and remove_from_cart events - the apparel-segment eCommerce behavior dataset logs all four types distinctly.
Why track remove-from-cart events separately?
Because deliberate removal signals rejection of price or selection, while silent non-purchase signals distraction - interventions differ completely between the two.
