end-of-day prices

End-of-day prices are one summary bar per instrument per trading session - the baseline product of market data APIs. Tiingo returns 13-field daily rows resamplable to monthly via its resampleFreq parameter, with EOD history back to 1962; EODHD builds its service around EOD history across 150,000+ tickers with 45+ API families.

What are end-of-day prices?

EOD is the settled record of a session: open, high, low, close and volume, finalized once markets close. It is the cheapest historical tier on virtually every vendor's plan and the foundation for backtesting and factor research. Three cataloged implementations:

  • Tiingo Financial Markets API - end-of-day prices back to 1962 (60+ years) across 80,000+ monitored assets; 13 fields per EOD row; daily OHLCV resamplable to weekly/monthly via resampleFreq; corporate-action-adjusted histories; quality score 8/10.

Why do end-of-day prices matter when choosing a dataset?

EOD looks commoditized until licensing and adjustment methodology bite.

  • Redistribution is the real price. Tiingo's self-serve tiers are internal-use only; displaying EOD data in an app requires a separate agreement (EOD-plus-IEX redistribution starts at $250/month for startups). EODHD's free tier caps history at one year and calls at 20/day.
  • Adjustment policy changes every historical number. Vendors restate past prices for splits and dividends - Tiingo publishes corporate-action-adjusted histories - so two sources' 'closes' disagree by design.
  • Depth claims need per-ticker verification. 'Back to 1962' is a catalog maximum; Tiingo's metadata endpoint returns each ticker's earliest date.

How do you evaluate end-of-day prices in a data source?

  1. Pin the field schema per row. Tiingo documents 13 fields per EOD price row - confirm a vendor's rows carry the OHLCV set plus the adjustment factors you need.
  2. Test resampling server-side. Tiingo's resampleFreq parameter aggregates to weekly/monthly; server-side resampling keeps your pipeline simple and consistent.
  3. Verify adjusted-versus-raw handling. Corporate-action-adjusted histories (Tiingo) and restated series (EODHD's corporate actions APIs) must be requested explicitly; defaults differ.
  4. Probe true depth per ticker. Query earliest-date metadata for your symbols - EODHD advertises 30+ years (Ford to June 1972), but its free plans stop at one past year.
  5. Read the redistribution clause before shipping. Internal use is the default license; display or resale triggers separate agreements and pricing on both vendors.

Where to see it in context: diversified-capital-markets data, diversified-reits data.

  • corporate-actions - the issuer events (splits, dividends, reorganizations) that force EOD histories to be restated, published as calendars and adjusted series.
  • daily-ohlcv-history - the accumulated per-session bar record underlying backtests, as surfaced on Yahoo Finance's Historical Data tabs.
  • ohlcv - the standard bar schema (open, high, low, close, volume) every EOD row instantiates.

Frequently asked questions

What are end-of-day prices?

One summary bar per instrument per trading session - open, high, low, close and volume - finalized after market close. They are the baseline historical tier of market data APIs: Tiingo serves 13-field EOD rows back to 1962, and EODHD offers EOD among its 45+ API families covering 150,000+ tickers.

How far back does end-of-day price history go?

Decades on paid tiers. Tiingo advertises EOD prices back to 1962 (60+ years) across 80,000+ assets, though its metadata endpoint reports the earliest date per ticker. EODHD provides 30+ years for many instruments - US stocks to earliest availability (Ford from June 1972) - but its free plan limits history to the past year.

Is end-of-day data free to use commercially?

Usually not without an upgrade. Tiingo's self-serve licenses are internal-use only; redistribution in presentations, websites or apps requires contacting Tiingo, with EOD-plus-IEX redistributable licenses starting around $250/month for startups. EODHD similarly meters its free tier (20 calls/day, past-year history) and sells higher limits.
