Interconnection point physical flows are gas flow measurements published per border-crossing point on the European transmission network, broken down by direction, TSO and gas day with optional hourly detail via the hourlyData parameter and history back to at least 2007. ENTSOG's Transparency Platform is the cataloged source.
What are interconnection point physical flows?
They are the metered quantities of gas moving across each point where transmission systems meet - cross-border links above all. The ENTSOG Transparency Platform record describes the family:
- per-interconnection-point physical flows, nominations, allocations, renominations and capacity
- coverage of hundreds of interconnection points across ~30 TSOs, multiple indicators, daily and hourly periods since 2007
- grain: per interconnection point, per direction, per gas day (or hour), per TSO

Physical flow is the measured quantity; nominations and renominations are the declarations that surround it, published beside it in the same platform.
Why do interconnection point flows matter when choosing a dataset?
Border-point flows are where European gas security becomes visible: they show which routes are carrying gas, in which direction, hour by hour.
- Direction matters. Flows are reported per direction per point, so a pipeline serving both ways appears twice - collapsing directions erases reversals.
- Gas-day framing differs from calendar time. The reporting period is the gas day, not midnight-to-midnight, and mismatches show up as phantom gaps.
- TSO identity anchors joins. With ~30 TSOs reporting, per-TSO attribution is what lets you separate one operator's border point from another's.
- Hourly detail is opt-in. The hourlyData parameter exists because daily granularity is the default; pulling hourly for hundreds of points since 2007 is a volume decision.
- Flows need their declaration context. Physical flow without nominations and allocations cannot explain why a pipeline ran below capacity.
How do you evaluate interconnection point flows in a data source?
- Confirm the point inventory. ENTSOG covers hundreds of interconnection points across ~30 TSOs; a source with a thin point list cannot answer route-level questions.
- Check the declared grain. The record states per interconnection point, per direction, per gas day (or hour), per TSO - any coarser feed has already aggregated away something you may need.
- Test the history depth. Coverage since 2007 supports pre-crisis baselines; shorter series cannot show structural shifts.
- Exercise the hourlyData parameter. Verify hourly retrieval behaves within rate limits before building on it - see api query etiquette for shared-host courtesy.
- Reconcile flow against nominations. Where measured flow diverges from nominated volumes, allocations explain the gap; a source carrying only one side halves the analysis.
