Straight answers about Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) data
How many complaints does the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database hold?
Roughly 17.24 million individual complaints were indexed as of August 2026, accumulated case by case since December 1, 2011. The total moves continuously, which is why a dated figure beats a round one: quote the snapshot you verified, then re-verify when it matters.
What fields does each complaint record carry?
Sixteen documented columns: the four-level product/sub-product/issue/sub-issue taxonomy, the company named, dates received and sent, the company's response and optional public response, a timely-response flag, state and ZIP under privacy truncation rules, submission channel, cohort tags such as Older American and Servicemember, and an opt-in narrative scrubbed of personal details.
Which products generate the most complaints?
Credit reporting dominates at roughly 4.7 million records, followed by debt collection, mortgage servicing, credit and prepaid cards, then checking and savings accounts, student loans, vehicle loans and money transfers including virtual currency. Issue vocabulary is conditional on product, so the taxonomy join, not keyword matching, is how you count anything here.
Are consumer narratives attached to every row?
No. Narratives are opt-in, so they ride on a minority share of records rather than the whole file, and the regulator states plainly that they are unverified. Treat the structured taxonomy as ground truth labels and the narrative text as a corpus to mine alongside them.
