Straight answers about USDA Economic Research Service data
What is the USDA ERS Food Dollar Series?
The official decomposition of every US food dollar into supply-chain stages - farm, processing, packaging, transportation, wholesale, retail, food service - across 47 spending accounts for 2007-2024. Example: the food wholesale industry group bill came to 6.3 cents per domestic food dollar in 2024.
How far back does per-capita US food availability data go?
To 1909, across more than 200 commodities including red meat, poultry and fish. Values from 1909-1989 sit in separate historical tables, and a loss-adjusted companion series restates availability after spoilage and waste - a proxy for consumption, not a measurement of intake.
What does the Food Environment Atlas measure?
304 county and state indicators spanning store availability, restaurant density, SNAP and WIC participation, farmers markets, health and socioeconomic measures, for roughly 3,100 US counties with vintages from 2012 to 2023. Its tract-level sibling, the Food Access Research Atlas, adds distance measures for all 84,119 tracts.
Does farm income data include state-level detail?
Yes - the United States plus all 50 states, one line item per row with units and vintage attached. State income statements and cash receipts continue to the latest estimate year, while state balance-sheet estimation ends in 2003, a boundary worth respecting in any panel build.
