Two properties in that block carry the analytical weight. First, the fixed regional layout - Americas, Europe, Japan, Asia Pacific, Worldwide - repeats identically under every year header back to 1986, so the whole archive normalizes into one tidy table without a per-year mapping step. Second, the units never move: everything is thousands of US dollars, meaning a 1986 worldwide month (~$1.65 billion) and the June 2026 print (~$152 billion) read off the same scale. That roughly ninety-fold expansion is the industry's growth curve in two rows.

Note what the smoothing row says: worldwide June 2026 billings landed about $17.5 billion above their own three-month moving average ($152 billion versus $134.4 billion). The raw series carries the timing; the smoothed series carries the direction.

What fields make up the dataset?

Ten verified fields form the core dictionary: the calendar-year block heading, twelve month columns, Q1-Q4 subtotal columns, a Total Year column closing each block, the five regional rows (Americas, Europe, Japan, Asia Pacific and a worldwide total defined so the other four sum to it - they do, to the dollar), and the smoothed companion series. Every field definition is confirmed against the published workbook layout rather than guessed from headers, and each travels with an example value beside it in our dictionary.

The five region rows are billing locations, not end-demand locations - a distinction worth writing down before anyone joins them to consumption-side data, because a fabless firm books revenue in one geography while its foundry output ships from another.

What coverage does the series carry?

Geography - five fixed cuts that have held steady since 1986. The stability matters more than the count: a regional share computed in 1990 computes identically today, which is rare in market data and priceless in backtests. The mix has moved anyway - in January 1986 Japan led with $638.5 million of the world total, ahead of the Americas at $555.9 million, Europe at $346.5 million and Asia Pacific last at $105.1 million; by June 2026 Asia Pacific carried about 56 percent of worldwide billings ($84.8 billion) and the Americas about 35 percent ($53.3 billion), while Europe ($8.2 billion) and Japan ($5.7 billion) combined for under 10 percent.

Temporal - 41 years deep at monthly and quarterly resolution, 1986 through the latest reported month, with Q1-Q4 and annual totals in every block. Forecast releases extend several years beyond the present.
