education indicators
Education indicators are harmonized statistical series - enrollment, expenditure, literacy, attainment - published as indicator tables rather than raw records so countries can be compared directly. The catalog's largest examples hold 4,986 UNESCO indicators (8.3 million data points) in the UIS Data Browser, 8,450 EdStats indicators, and NCES's 101 Condition of Education indicators.
What is education indicators?
An indicator is a pre-computed, definition-stable measure - not a microdata row. The cataloged examples make the scale concrete. UIS Data Browser (UNESCO Institute for Statistics) holds "~8.3 million education data points across 4,986 education indicators" in its February 2026 release, spanning 200+ countries with national-level annual observations from 1972 to 2025. World Bank Education Statistics pairs "8,450 EdStats indicators (source 12)" with "156 WDI education indicators (SE.*)" across roughly 217 economies. NCES Condition of Education compiles "101 indicator pages (152 topic-tagged links) plus 243 linked Digest reference tables" for the United States.
Harmonization is the operative word: UIS, the UOE collection and WDI publish indicators broken down by ISCED level, sex and age band so a German enrollment rate and a Brazilian one sit on the same definition. That is what distinguishes an indicator table from the underlying administrative returns - and why indicator pages, not raw records, are the unit analysts cite.
Why does education indicators matter when choosing a dataset?
Indicator choice silently decides every conclusion downstream, which is why sourcing them carelessly is expensive.
- Definitions differ across publishers. UNESCO, World Bank and NCES each fix their own indicator definitions; mixing a UIS enrollment indicator with a national headcount without checking ISCED mapping produces numbers that look comparable and are not.
- Coverage gaps are structural. UIS observations are national-level annual only, and EdStats runs to 217 economies - claims about subnational schooling cannot come from these sources at all.
- Lag is part of the data. Latest reference years typically trail publication by roughly two years, so "current" education indicators describe a school system two cycles back.
- Free access is the norm here. All three flagship sources ship free - UIS with open JSON and bulk CSV, World Bank via DataBank export and a free API, NCES as US-government commercial delivery terms - matching the 82.4% free share across the 1,744 cataloged datasets.
How do you evaluate education indicators in a data source?
- Count the indicators before trusting breadth claims. 4,986 (UIS), 8,450 (EdStats) and 101 (NCES COE) are documented counts - ask any other source to state its equivalent denominator.
- Check the ISCED breakdown depth. Harmonized series break down by ISCED level, sex and age band; a source lacking that dimension cannot be joined to the international collections.
- Verify the reference-year lag. UIS's current release is February 2026 with observations to 2025; confirm how far behind your candidate source runs before building a dashboard on it.

How many education indicators does UNESCO publish?
The UIS Data Browser documents 4,986 education indicators carrying about 8.3 million data points in its February 2026 release, covering 200+ countries and territories at national level.
What is the difference between EdStats and WDI education indicators?
EdStats is the World Bank's dedicated education source with 8,450 indicators (source 12), while WDI contributes 156 education indicators carrying SE.* codes; both cover roughly 217 economies and are exported through DataBank or the free API.
Are education indicators free to use?
The cataloged flagships are: UIS offers an open JSON API and bulk CSV, World Bank exports are free, and NCES Condition of Education is US Government commercial delivery terms - all at no cost.
